Homemade Taco Shells with a Waffle Iron: Easy, Low-Carb, & Delicious

Sometimes, the best ideas are simple. Today, I dug out my grandma's old waffle iron and decided to try making taco shells with it. It was so quick and easy, I had to share this tip: make your own taco shells with a waffle iron!

Why a waffle iron is a great choice:

Save money: Cheese slices are much cheaper than pre-made taco shells. You can make your own taco shells inexpensively by slicing cheese and grilling it on the waffle iron.

Easy to use: Using a waffle iron is simple and fast. You can cook taco shells in just minutes!

Flexible: Make as many or as few taco shells as you need. No need to heat up the whole oven for just one or two shells.

Quick heating: The waffle iron heats up quickly, so you can start cooking shells right away.

How to make low-carb taco shells with a waffle iron:

  1. Heat up the waffle iron.
  2. Slice cheese and place it on the waffle iron. You can layer two slices for thicker shells.
  3. Cook the taco shells until they start to brown and harden around the edges.
  4. Carefully remove from the waffle iron.
  5. Place the cheese disc over the handle of a ladle or similar kitchen utensil placed between two cups/cans to shape it into a taco shell.
  6. Once the taco shell has hardened, you can lift it onto a plate and fill it with your favorite toppings.

In the background, you can see the first taco shell I made. It's important to make sure you put at least two slices of cheese on top of each other on the waffle iron so that the shell doesn't become too thin and holey.
Remember:

  • Adjust the cooking time depending on the thickness of the cheese and how crispy you want your shells.
  • Experiment with different types of cheese for unique flavors.
  • Get creative with your fillings!
